GLASS REPLACES PLASTIC IN THE WATERBEACH TAPS

July 2024. Waterbeach.

The pattern of the summer; Sunday to Wednesday round Mum and Dad’s, then a mad dash up north to visit somewhere, anywhere, new to stimulate the brain.

Last week was A Good Week. The parents garden looked gorgeous,

and Dad had a visit from his older sister, from whom he was clearly borrowing clothes in 1936.

Tuesday night in Waterbeach was traumatic, though. Trains to Cambridge cancelled, the local choices constrained by the early week closure of The Sun and a less than stella(r) range in the pub across the green.

What to do ? Take a look at how the re-opened Taps is doing a month in ?

We’d popped in on re-opening night to find a community pub with ambitious plans and Wherry in a plastic glass. Beer can never be judged in plastic (or half-pints) of course.

It wasn’t packed, a few young lads, lady with a dog, chap with a pint of Purity Gold. At least that makes an easy choice.

One beer is plenty, often more than enough. I’d have preferred the “Next One On”, of course, but the Purity was “OK” (NBSS 2.5/3). I’ve had worse in GBG pubs, though not often recently.

Freed from opening night buffets, the place looked warm and welcoming, and if those promised Asian snacks do turn up I’d pop back, though probably not for Bridgerton Afternoon.

The youngsters at the bar slagged off Phil Foden and said that Cole Palmer should have played. The lady with the dog and bloke with a pint chatted less important matters.

For an inexplicable reason I suddenly wanted a pint of Abbot that the village Greene King pub doesn’t served.

Thank goodness for our new Co-op.

  1. Palmer and Watkins were good impact subs but they should have come on earlier and probably started in the final.
