A RACE TO THE GREYHOUND

July 2024. Stafford.

Half a dozen pubs is a sensible length for a pub crawl curated exploration of craft bars,

and 5pm is a sensible time to finish, just in time for “The Chase” and a Chinese takeaway. “Sensible” isn’t a word normally applied to CAMRA, but there’s a first time for everything.

Almost exactly on time, we arrived at the Greyhound , which I forgot to take a pic of so here’s one from my previous visit.

A 3rd Stafford backstreet boozer in an hour, a GBG regular just displaced in the Guide by a bod, though notably the town’s allocation have fallen from 6 to 2 since 2017.

Some good pubs there.

The Greyhound isn’t a bad pub, but it felt a bit modernised compared to the previous two,

and someone took their beer back here. I’m not saying they shouldn’t have taken it back, and my Black Knight (plus the dregs of someone else’s half) were fine, and who can really complain about a pub with these snacks ?

It was just…a bit of a subdued finish. The Holdens poster captured the mood.

Still, some great company, some top Bass, and proof that there’s life outside the GBG.

But you knew that…

  1. Ahem! My recollection is that after I got my very dodgy beer changed, and started to drink the replacement Ludlow Black Knight, you went on a campaign to undermine our appreciation of said beer. Which at the time I thought was a change from your usual stance of knowing nothing about beer, but now I’m not so sure.

Not taking a photo on the way in is excusable this once, as Paul used the back street entrance, confusing us with his local knowledge, but at least one pub photographer remembered to take one on the way out. If it wasn’t you, I guess it must have been me. (Smug grin!)
