THE BUTLER’S BELL BOTTLES IT

July 2024. Stafford.

Pub 3 on the official Stafford stagger curated exploration of non-GBG boozers craft bars.

The Butler’s Bell has been the most intriguing of the towns pubs, Stafford’s second Spoons sold to Davenport but seemingly never offering Davenport beers.

The bottles out front lured me in,

but faced with only keg two of our group did the approved “No cask, walk out” dance and headed to Pub 4.

Since it was Will’s round I had the bottle being advertised outside. A bit like going in a Sam Smiths pub and opting for the fruit beer rather than a half of OBB.

The Butler looks what it is, a soulless ex Spoons with multiple sports screens, one showing the women’s cricket.

I’ll be fair, the bottled Gold was actually OK, but the fact I had to finish off Will’s ice cold keg says it all.

I propose that Paul go in the Butlers Bell on a daily basis and demand cask. But will he ? Oh no.

  1. Ah, the days when BBC programmes had military music sig tunes, and TV ad voice-overs were in commanding Sandhurst tones “Beer at home means Davenport’s (and that’s that – you lowly Private)”
