MORE BRUNNING AND PRICE WANNABES IN GREATER WREXHAM

July 2024. Erbistock. Wrexham.

From posh north Wrexham to posh south Wrexham for our next GBG newbie,

but you’d hardly notice the difference.

Just beyond lovely St. Hilary’s,

at the end of a dead end track, lies Erbistock’s Boat.

I often wonder how many renowned pubs I still haven’t been to because they haven’t been to in my GBG ticking lifetime, and the Boat is up there with the Tan Hill Inn and the Live and Let Live, a pub that sounds incredibly familiar (possibly from Sunday Telegraph articles).

A gorgeous Deeside setting has every table reserved for diners; don’t tell me folk round here can’t afford to eat out. Scouse accents abound.

It’s a typically Hollywood (Wrexham) menu;

but I’m here for cask not carpaccio, definitely not their target audience.

Surely this is a Brunning and Price ? Only the lack of a tractor (again) and house beer suggest otherwise. I go Big Hand (£2.35, again) as it’s local, even though (again) no-one is drinking cask.

Another really cheery young barman laughs when I ask if he’d prefer cash or card, adding,

Obviously it helps us dodge tax if you pay cash“.

Who says the young have no humour ?

In the garden I discover the Boat is run by a former B & P founder, similar to that Farndon pub last year, and I challenge you to say you can tell the difference.

But I can tell the difference between NBSS 3 and NBSS 2.5, and this was the latter. But £2.35 for a nice seat in the sun by the flowing Dee ? Not a bad deal.

*An apology to the young chap at the Hyde’s pub yesterday, it was actually this chap with the quip I get to repeat now;

  1. The Boat is run by Graham Price. The Hare is Farndon is owned by Jerry Brunning who has (I think) 3 others, including the recently reopened Bull in Gorsedd near Holywell. Unfortunately the Bull is managed by an obnoxious bigot (IMHO).

  2. Most of us I would guess read the posts as fiction so the apology is superfluous. Only the diary readers require such accuracy.
