THE QUEENS HOTEL, GOSPORT – OK WITH JOE, OK WITH ME

June 2024. Gosport.

The rubbish buses had scuppered my plans to attack central Gosport’s craft glories (probably not open anyway since it’s a Monday), so I cut my losses and walked the 10 minutes through Newtown to the town’s second GBG perennial.

At least, the Queen’s Hotel used to be,

as the window revealed on my forlorn Covid exploration.

It isn’t in GBG24, but panic not, as that may be due to a change that sees it under the ownership of crafty Four Ales Taproom. Anyway, I’ve raved on here about my decade-old visit to the Queens, compared notes on it with another fan in the Itchy Pig recently,

Not very crafty looking, you’ll be delighted/gutted to see.

but not only does it still look gorgeous,

it has what I’d say is a classic cask line-up.

As long as they can shift it, and with gentlefolk (including me, almost) all on pints of Oakham I sensed they probably could.

The Hopback Stout was rich and sweet, another 3.5 at perfect temperature.

Some curiosities on display to admire; a soundtrack running from “The Bitterest Pill” to Fleetwood Mac to the Beautiful South seemed a decade or two too late for the custom,

the note on the bar says “We prefer card or exact cash only“, and there’s an impeccable D-Day memory display.

I go off and explore, noting the celebrity endorsements (top) and press tributes to another longstanding landlady in a pub that seems a bit less irreverent than the Junction.

That is, until I reach the Gents…

Wonderful. And any pub good enough for Joe Jackson is good enough for me.

  1. Great choices the Goodens Gold is lovely as is their Perridge Pale which we walk 6 or 7 miles for most Tuesdays as well as the cracking traditional pub the Eight Bells, Alton to drink it in.

  2. I’ve been to Portsmouth a couple of times. I have not been to impressed. Looks like Gosport might be a better destination for me.
