BRING YOUR OWN

April 2024. Birchencliffe. Huddersfield.

Mrs RM was put in charge of picking the curry house on the way back from Prescot, and excelled herself with the Grameen Lounge just off Junction 24 of the M62.

OK, Bradford is better, but I’d never had a curry in Huddersfield, and could tell you nothing about Birchencliffe, a place with little to interest the Pub Man.

But Grameen had the feel of a parlour pub, with curry, helped by a power cut and some incredibly informal service.

It was packed just before 6pm, and as we sat down to poppadoms and giant onion bhajis,

we suddenly realised we were the only ones not opening cans of cider and Madri in this rare BYO place.

Yes, they got through that whole carton of Thatcher’s Gold.

Good to see it’s not just Mrs RM addicted to her mobile.

The food was great; chicken dansak and a house special,

but it was the friendly casualness of the place that one us over, the staff ritually taking the mick out of the regulars (“You REALLY want vinegar ? This ain’t fish and chips mate).

Authentic soundtrack too.

The only thing that seemed overpriced were the soft drinks, we should have got cans from over the road at Tesco Express and lipped in the campervan.

But some idiot had forgot to pack the duvet, hadn’t they ?
