TOP 100 PUBS – THE LITTLE MAN, WETTENHALL

`March 2024. Wettenhall. Winsford.

A second successive new GBG entry in a remote Cheshire village that I’d never heard of, and acquiring this new knowledge is what makes following the Guide the nation’s Number 1 social activity.

Between the salt towns of Winsford and the rambling railway station of Crewe, Wettenhall (looks like Cholmondeston to me) is another sub-200 village clinging on to its last pub.

Writing this blog encourages pointless, but rewarding research, and I just discovered this next pub is in the same Parliamentary constituency as the last one at Hankelow half an hour south.

Eddisbury is one of those rambling constituencies named for an ancient hundred rather than a town, a bit like Haltemprice & Howden. A Labour election win here in 2024 would be a seismic event.

Its claim to fame seems to be a complete lack of public transport to enable BRAPA to get to the Little Man,

perhaps a kindly farmer in Winsford will drive him here in his (or her, sexist !) tractor.

It’s a gem, presumably recent revitalised as it had never made the Guide before, and it’s hard to understand just looking at it now.

Not as classic, perhaps, as the Travellers Rest down the road at Alpraham, but pretty much my favoured type of pub.

Proper seating, tat on every surface,

Old Boy at the bar, Una Paloma Blanca on the video jukebox;

and the cool, crisp, foamy pint of HPA that shows you what Wye Valley beer can taste like,

NOW 70s ! rumbled on through the mid-70s holiday classics of your childhood,

we discussed Irish Good Friday opening times, I reckoned Simon will be in pub heaven at the Little Man.

IF he can get here.

  1. Went here many years ago with John Clarke with a view to writing an article for Opening Times. It was more down-to-earth in those days, the kind of rural pub where the 4x4s in the car park are muddy Subarus rather than shiny Range Rovers.

    There was a bit of a tangible “atmosphere”. First pint out, undrinkable murk. Changed grudgingly, but the second wasn’t much better, and it was one of those “cut your losses” ,moments.

    Sounds rather more welcoming now.

    1. Definitely down to earth now ! Terrific clear pint. It had actually opened up earlier than advertised, possibly for the Old Boy at the bar. Duncan (Pubmeister) had mentioned how much he liked it a few days previously.
