March 2024.
From Sheffield to Waterbeach and back. Repeat. And then a bit of Rochdale.
That town hall and a craft bar crawl with Blackpool Jane were the highlights of a busy month.
With some east Yorkshire coast gorgeousness at the start.
And a big blob of Portugal in the middle.
Four Portuguese cities, all worth your while, though more for cake and Choco Frito than craft.
Of those four, Setubal with its fried cuttlefish and rambling cobbled lanes won the day.
Statwise, 44 different pubs, plus a dozen Portuguese bars, which is either quite good or quite bad depending on your perspective.
New Pub of the Month – Quirky Den, Whitby
A bit cosy for some, but if you want to chat with strangers this is the place.
Old Pub of the Month – Ma Pardoes, Netherton,
with a more than honourable mention for the Beacon Hotel.
Beer of the Month -Brid’s Cross – Under the Eildon Tree in the Baum.
and a stellar Banks’s in the Posada, in a great month for cask.
April Preview.
Well, obviously the CAMRA AGM takes precedence. Will the GBG be slimmed down ?
Will I find decent fish and chips in Anstruther ?
And how long will Stafford Paul last in Caird Hall before he heads off to the Speedwell ?
“And how long will Stafford Paul last in Caird Hall before he heads off to the Speedwell ?”
Until just after we’ve voted on motion 5.

My CAMRA membership has lapsed. What’s motion 5?

Motion 5 – Every GBG pub to stock at least one hazy citrus craft keg beer priced over £7. Y’know, to save independent breweries and all that.

Of course! What would happen to all those railway arches otherwise?

If only it were as sensible as that…
