A PROPER JOB IN CANNOCK

March 2024. Cannock.

Big drama on CAMRA Discourse this morning as I’m accused of disrespecting Harlow, just imagine ME slagging off any of our UK towns.

But I notice last time in Cannock I did compare it to Harlow, so I’ve got my work out bigging up Stafford’s most unsung town now.

They’ve made a big effort at the station and the walkway into town;

Google maps is convinced that “Cannock Heritage Sign 4” is closed but it’s not, and tells me all I need to know,

which is not a lot.

Ancient church of St. Lukes,

very modern shopping precinct, with my first of two GBG newbies looking resplendent in its faded pink.

The Merchant is yet further evidence that the Beer Guide can accommodate plain pubs,, the sort where the staff smile and say “Love you !” (to each other) and look like they’re enjoying their vital jobs.

a self-proclaimed Stonegate “local pub” with no ale shrine pretensions, and a Hobson’s choice.

I like a Hobson’s choice, though perhaps Proper Job is one the strong end for some, but it works for me, and that lone cask is cool and chewy and well under four quid, a 3.5+ where you least expect it. I wonder if I’m being generous, but I’m not; it really is superb.

Book your favourite booth” says the sign, in a pub decorated for Easter. Is there any time of the year a pub isn’t decorated for something ?

A dozen in, including a lady with a “Paul’s Boutique” T-shirt, but the soundtrack is Hall & Oates not Beastie Boys.

Never heard that one before; it’s normally “She’s Gone” you get from the “Abandoned Luncheonette” LP.

The Proper Job is SO good I almost stay for a second pint and a burger, but I’ve no doubt there’s so much to explore I need to move on, after a trip to the “Flat Capped Gents.

  1. I remember Cannock railway station before Beeching closed it.

    My most recent attendance at St Lukes Church was last June for a funeral I left York early for.

    Merchants is hardly recognisable from the much smaller Swan it used to be.
