December 2023. Hull.
£28.30 for the train to Hull (at least I had a seat and a charging point). But it was a great trip, not just for three classic pubs but some unexpected street art in the heart of the industrial quarter, which doesn’t yet have a name so I suggest we call it Hull N/4. I am marketing genius.

Leaving the Old Bull & Bush I find a chap on a bike zoom up towards me. He has a Chinese takeaway in his bright orange bag.
“Oi mate, do you know where the theatre is”. I haven’t a clue (does he mean the Truck ?) and point, aimlessly, and he zooms off, equally aimlessly.
And then I reach an astonishing area of art round about Wincolmlee.

Yes, that’s the Wincolmlee famous for this backstreet classic;

Sadly the Whalebone had gone the way of all classic backstreet pubs, so I press on alongside the docks,

where the art gets better and better.

You’d pay a tenner to see this in an exhibition in Shoreditch.

It’s SO good, I almost forget I’m in an industrial estate in Hull in the dark, possibly yards from a red light area.

The docks are as striking as the art, to be honest.

Last time here I was witness to a ferocious argument between two young lovers that would later form the basis of an award winning BBC documentary starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Ronald McDonald,

Really lovely. So nice I almost forgot I needed a wee.
Just in time,

the sign pointed me to a pub…
I think there’s a need for a “thataway” sign-writer in many parts of the country, primarily Newark Northgate station, obviously, but your example in Hull is a good start.
Fortunately I know where the facilities can be found in my house, which saves me the trouble of taking the train to Hull for a pee.

That Moors’ & Robson’s Breweries sign must be no later than 1960 when they were taken over by Hewitts of Grimsby who before long were part of Bass Charrington.

That stretch of graffiti art is Bankside Gallery.
Some great pub tips for my next Hull trip! I was a student there in the late 80’s, I used to enjoy the George and haven’t been back since.

Thanks, it did look like a gallery of sorts. Always great to be surprised by that.
You’ll love my last Hull pub.
