A TRIBUTE TO BESSIE DAVIES

Sad news tonight that Bessie Davies, long-term landlady of the wonderful Dyffryn Arms in Pontfaen (“Bessie’s), has just died, aged 94.

This photo is from the Pembrokeshire Herald, whose reporter Tom Sinclair has just posted a gorgeous tribute to Bessie. It captures the spirit of the Dyffryn better than any photo I ever took.

I only met Bessie the once, I think she poured Ind Coope Burton from the jug back in 1997 when I was doing the CAMRA Silver Selection. Like the pub, it was immaculate.

The Bass served by a family member on Duncan and my visit just before lockdown was a Top 10 Bass, and the Dyffryn was as great as ever.

A life very well lived. Thanks for the memories, Bessie.

  1. Aww RIP Bessie had a wonderful trip to Huws camping and he recommended we go over the hill to see Bessie pub a few years ago it was hard going cycling from Newport over hill sooo windy I’ve never had to pedal down hill before! But well worth it to experience this unique pub xx
