RUNNING FREE – INTO MARYLAND

December 2023. Maryland. East London.

I hope you’re enjoying this pictorial trip through East London as much as I did, but do I care if you’re not ?

With Hackney and Stratford conquered, I just had Forest Gate to go. Theoretically doable on bus, but who wants to use a bus. Ugh.

Far better to walk the 1.7 miles, explore Maryland and the backstreets of Newham, and marvel at the Time Spiral outside the station on the Elizabeth line, which I’ve still never been on. I hear it goes to Reading, can that possibly be right ?

Yes, it can.

So Quinno could come here from the Nag’s Head where he lives to enjoy some of the cheapest Singapore rice I’ve ever seen (in 2021, anyway) at Canton Takeaway.

But what pubby joys would Quinno find in Maryland ?

Umm.

And that’s your lot. Yes, it’s the Iron Maiden pub the Cart & Horses or nowt.

That’s the CAMRA approved Iron Maiden, of course.

I was a teenage Maiden fan, till Di’Anno left anyway.

I thought briefly about doing a “What’s famous about this pub ?” type blog,

but they’re not exactly hiding their light under a bushel(l), Garry* or otherwise.

You’ll be devastated to read I didn’t go in, so here’s what it looks like, from their website.

Hmm, bit smarter than you expected. No cask, but perhaps the largest range of Robinson’s bottled beers in the country, and I just made that up. You could have a good night working through those Troopers.

Heathen Deity play there tomorrow night; you remember Heathen Deity, right ?

*I’ve just noticed that Gary Bushell actually wrote “Running Free – The Authorised Biography of Iron Maiden” which makes that reference official genius.

    1. It worked well for me from the Jamaica Wine House to the Victoria on Streatham Place.
It must be very popular with Liverpool Street and Paddington having knocked Waterloo from the most used railway station to third place.

  1. The cart and Horses used to a scruffy boozer where the bands played in a six inch high stage in the main room
After a thorough refurbishment it reopened with a purpose built basement for the bands
I saw a very good all female Deep Purple Tribute there Diva Purple.
Strange to think that a group of twenty something Chelmsford ladies would look to emulate the compositions of Blackmore and Lord but they do it very well.
I can also recommend Slady the all female Slade Tribute fronted by Gobby Holder. who have just sold out te Lexington
