A tribute TO Stratford

December 2023 Stratford.

Stratford E15, that is; no-one would look to convince you of the charms of that Warwickshire version.

Most visitors to the transport interchange turn one way to the Olympic site and West Ham or another to the shops and the Westfield Tap.

Before that tick at the Black Bull I think my only previous exploration of the town itself was 20 years ago (King Edward VII).

Blimey it’s changed.

Scuplture on every corner, children’s museums, Hungarian chimney cakes and bicycle racks.

OK, it hasn’t really embraced the micropub culture that Londoners embrace,

but these things take time. Like the post.

Such a glorious burst of colour, and culinary variety, and life.

Even the town hall sparkled.

My next pub was in Forest Gate, and I’d thought I’d walk there, reminiscing about my visit to the Goldengrove in September 1997 when I scored the Spitfire a 5.

No, I really did.

  1. The only “5s” I can readily recall are :-
Three x Abbott at the GK hospitality bar after a brewery trip 1976.
A Pedigree in deepest Oxfordshire in 1982.
A Butterknowle Bitter in The Yorkshire Dales in 1992.
It has been a long wait since then.
