“Let there be light”. Or at least Old Tom. But there wasn’t.

December 2023. Macclesfield.

Barely a mile between these eight (8) pubs on the Old Codgers Macclesfield pub crawl (sorry, “curated hostelry exploration”,

which frankly is a bit disappointing as it’s the street art and underpasses that make a place.

Our penultimate pub was barely 3 minutes jog across the A523 (Paul Mudge speed), and the Silk Trader looks the business at dusk.

Used to be the Boarhound, a Robbies pub with a fearsome GBG reputation (see also : British Flag, Dolphin) but it’s lower key these days, though the horses head on the (empty) pump is a nice touch.

Now, I’m not saying I’d have had a pint of Old Tom here, but I’d definitely have had a pint of Old Tom here to (almost) end the day, and ab OK Unicorn was a bit of a disappointment.

Facebook is a log of TV football, pie offers and blokes singing Robbie Williams on Sunday night, so you can judge the trade for yourself. Mudgie will some up the furnishings better than I can, but the only feature of note was the dimness of the lighting.

Our request to put the lights on was met with “the lights ARE on”,

and there was no answer to that.

  1. It used to be the Boarhound and before that the Commercial.
It was my pint of Old Tom, room temperature and none the worse for it, as my sixth and penultimate pint on 25th March 2020 that prompted me to suggest Macc for a Proper Day Out this winter. That and the Castle having re-opened. Then I also didn’t get in the Waters Green Tavern but with using the Nags Head had three pints of Robinsons, only one Old Tom though.

      1. Indeed.
        Thank you.
Yes, Saturday 25th January it was.
Friday 6th March was our Proper Day Out in Burton and Friday 13th March was my last pint for four months.

  2. It’s not a horse’s head, it’s a unicorn!

That comment that “the lights ARE on” will go down in history. Unfortunately a phone photo greatly exaggerates the actual amount of light there was.

  3. It’s a bit like

“If you don’t stop ringing our bell and go away I’m going to call the police”

    “We ARE the police, madam”

Now, remind me, who was that?
