MOTHER AND CHILD REUNION

November 2023. Waterbeach, Pembury, Rye.

November has been a difficult month, though one we’d seen coming a while.

Plans to spend the month in Rye and Tirana were scuppered as first my Dad, then my Father-in-law, decided a spell in A & E would be nice.

We saw them both, starting with an overdue hair appointment in Waterbeach.

That cut would cost you £29 in the trendiest part of Manchester, just behind the Circus and Grey Horse.

The boys were pleased to see their Nanna,

and his their disappointment at not being able to stay till Chung Hwa opened, but the fish and chips from Milton’s Chinese chippy Jaws were sensational.

And then we headed south to Tonbridge, where the boys and I finally met Mrs RM for the first time in November, just like in the Paul Simon song.

After an afternoon in Pembury Hospital, where FIL (see Mumsnet for acronym) is recovering, Mrs RM insisted the boys see the caravan in Rye.

We made it as far as Saheeb’s Indian Restaurant in Newenden.

The Southworths would have liked the traditional English curries, perhaps not quite Apne level but a NISS 3.5 anyway.

Lovely, slow (unrushed), service; a chance for a family catch-up and a discussion about hardcore gigs, holidays in Bucharest, and dad’s disgraceful behaviour in Manchester the night before.

In the morning we walked off the chips and curry on the beach at Rye Harbour,

and then started the 5 hour journey “home” to Sheffield.

  1. We drove through Newenden yesterday evening, on our way back from Dungeness, and I remarked to Mrs PBT’s, about the floodlights, bathing the of exterior Saheeb’s, in an array of many different colours.

“There’s not enough colour in the world today,” was her reply, and I have to agree with her. Those lights certainly brightened up a chilly, late evening, and accented the building, which has the appearance of having once been a pub. Speaking of which, the White Hart, on the Kent side of the Rother, is still worthy of a visit, next time you’re down that way.

Nice looking curry, and some nice family pictures as well.

    1. Those lights instantly identified Saheeb’s as a curry house, and saved us the fuss of parking in Rye and taking a risk on a full restaurant. We were there before 7, and it had filled up pretty much by 8. Very casual, unfussy, friendly service, though if we’d been in a rush (we weren’t for a change) it might have seemed slow !
