BLABY’S TIGER ROARS

November 2023. Blaby. Leicestershire.

A couple of days spent in the east Midlands, doing what tickers call “mopping” up the new Leicestershire GBG entries, which this year fail to include anything in the county town. Sadly, no return visit to the Ale Wagon, then.

And Leicester’s necklace (?) of commuter towns haven’t been that exciting compared to, say, Nottingham or Sheffield.

But Blaby is neat, and full of takeaways, and notable only for its wonderfully dull Wiki entry. In truth, I’d confused it with Oadby.

The high point is Ye Olde Bakers Arms from 1485, though that immediately loses marks for writing historic dates on the wall. Why ?

And inside, my status as drinker not diner established, I am ushered out of the nice restaurant and treated with indifference.

At least the public bar looks old,

but the Christmas deccies 6 weeks early ruin the effect.

And it pains me, it really pains me, to tell you the Tiger was nectar (NBSS 4), possible the best I’ve ever had.

But is it worth risking a pub that plays Toto’s “Africa” just for nectar ?

Your call.

  1. Blaby ain’t the same since Waitrose became an Iceland! And the Bulls Head changed hands and was refurbished and removed the copper-topped tables and stopped selling good beer. However…

The Bakers is worth a visit, though a fit and healthy ticker would be better served at the Bulls Head in nearby Whetstone.

  2. Everards Tiger is one of the most consistent beers and I’ve found it well kept in all sorts of pubs where you wouldn’t expect it. Best of all is in Titanic pubs, where you don’t have to spend a lot of time dithering over one of their own beers, just go for the Tiger.

    You know it makes sense.

(Beer is so much better without the plum extract.)
