CAFE #9. YOU BYO, I’LL HAVE A SMOOTHIE

October 2023. Sheffield.

Quite a few gigs in October, always a great month for music.

Mrs RM had listened to melodic nu-folkies Adam Beattie and Fiona Evans at the Square Chapel in Halifax and insisted I catch it them in Sheffield. Have YOU tried standing up to Mrs RM ?

An hour’s walk round West Sheffield to Cafe #9,

a gorgeous little place with the rare distinction of being BYO.

I’m not one for tinnies, so I stuck to one of their smoothies, while the rest of an audience of a couple of dozen drank herbal tea.

All very polite, and when I told Fiona (who co-wrote One Direction’s second Number 1) Mrs RM had told me she was great she said “How sweet!” and meant it. Her songs at the piano were, er, sweet.

The rain set in as I left just after 10, and with buses half hourly I was forced (forced, I tell you) to take refuge in the Broadfield.

My first pint was OK, in fact the middle clip was almost immediately turned round, but a rushed half of that Abbeydale on the left was nectar, and a packed Broadfield was shifting plenty of cask so there’s hope.

Unwisely I then used the 10 minutes before the tram home in the Old Shoe,

a new Sheff craft bar that Mick likes more than Will.

Some of us appreciate our murk, like this gorgeous Beak v Beermoth collaboration.

And there it stopped,

though both Woody’s karaoke bar and Fagan’s Bass emporium would be open till midnight. Admirable self-discipline.
