THACKLEY MICRO v “THE SMITHS”

October 2023. Thackley, Bradford.

One more in West Yorkshire and it’s a rare GBG county completion.

Still a thrill, even when you’ve completed the Guide, a bit like Amundsen completing a circumnavigation of Oslo IKEA the year after ticking the North Pole or something.

Where are we ?

Thackley, north Bradford. Near the Isle Working Mens Club.

You can tell by the Tets. And the cricket ball on the bar.

Boycott scored 23 runs in a day with that ball in 1969.

What can I say. Tiny bar, not enough room to swing a dog. I make sure I don’t stand on his tail as I ask to share the table.

Full within 3 minutes of opening, the local cask OK. Actually, the other chap calls it OK too when asked, so not me being miserly.

But a jolly place, and when someone shouts “Alexa, play ANYTHING” and the landlady adds “But NOT the ******* Smith’s” I give it the benefit of the doubt.

But can we have just one year without a new north Bradford micro ? Please ?

    1. Nothing with any vocals at all – even if it were The Alleluia Chorus – would be better, IYAM.

But then, you’d have to do something about “Pick Up The Pieces” too…

  1. Playing something by The Smiths there would clearly be casting pearls before swine, but these lines from Panic would be appropriate for your West Yorkshire ticking: “On the Leeds side streets that you slip down/Provincial towns you jog ’round”.

  2. Sticking to the A657 corridor then. Nice place the Ainsbury. Its my local CAMRA branch that are responsible for all these North Bradford micros. Pity I can’t get them to visit the Hermit at Burley Woodhead, its too long a walk for most of them.
