CONFIDENCE IN PUBLIC TRANSPORT AT THE LITTLE JOHN

October 2023. Hathersage. Peak District.

An hour in Hathersage before the return to Sheffield. I was wearing inappropriate footwear so I couldn’t tackle Dale’s Bottom or Robin Hood’s Stoop.

But after continuing to tick the GBG24 in singles at the Scotsmans Pack I did head up the lane to tick Little John’s grave.

A cobbled lane to St Michael and All Saints, too, very nice.

Best score the church while we’re here (NCSS 3).

In fairness the graveyard overlooking the town is the star,

but I’m unconvinced by Little John’s grave,

although for any Americans reading the legends of Robin Hood are, of course, fact.

Back in the village I’ve 25 minutes before the train chugs in.

What on earth can you do in 25 minutes (wrong answers only).

The Little John was always the Guide pub, before a terrible error of judgement saw the window signage show “LJs”, more appropriate for a Chesterfield night club.

Inside the seating looks a bit wrong, long tables for big groups dominating the bar.

And we’ve entered Halloween silly season.

I detest Halloween, possibly because I used to pick pumpkins as a boy.

Redwillow is an odd choice for your two beers, but in fairness the Headless is cool and tasty NBSS 3+, and I remember to score it on What Pub while listening to James Blunt. I bet James Blunt scores his beers.

The only other customer is a diner with a giant glass of wine waiting for her bus.

Best give me a doggie bag (for her lunch, not the wine) or I’ll miss it” she says.

They’ll be another one soon enough” says the reassuring barman.

Better have another glass of wine then“.

  1. “There’ll be another one soon enough” says the reassuring barman.

That’s the sort of thing said by people who *never* use public transport. And more particularly by purveyors of alcohol who never use public transport. If he had been better informed and differently motivated he’d have said, “better run! It’s the last bus for two weeks!”
