MODERN MUSIC ISN’T RUBBISH. YOU’VE JUST NEVER HEARD ANY.

September 2023. End of the Road Festival, Cranborne Chase.

Oooh, more pinking. I’d coloured in the things I wanted to see in the programme,

forgetting to allow time to buy liquorice, craft murk and Nepalese curry.

You’re probably thinking “But I don’t recognise ANY of those names, Retired Martin !“, and it’s true to say neither did I, or Mrs RM, or our 24 year old.

This tent displayed artists who will never grace Larmer Gardens (thankfully).

But EOTR exists to bring you music you’ve never heard but really should. There’s even a little chart that guides you to the music you might like.

I was guided to Laura Jean, whose “Girls on the TV” was the song of the festival.

But everywhere you’d hear something of interest,

unless you sat at the back of the Garden with the Waitrose picnic mums.

Mainly for Newbury Tim, here’s my blow-by-blow account with scores out of 5.

There’s all sorts of music, but if you had to boil it down to three it would be folky women,

serious men,

and plain weirdness.

Heloise Werner captivated us with her covers of Hildegard of Bingen on the Sunday night at the stage backing on to the sheep fields. You cant beat a bit of Hildegard.

And if you bore of music, there’s always sunsets,

and crispy duck.

Which isn’t quite crispy beef, but close enough.

  1. @timofnewbury says
Thanks for the ratings – much appreciated
I was doing some virtual festival listening c/o Spotify and also rated Kokoroko & Alogte Goho so good to see them with top ratings.
Interesting about Five Easy Pieces film – not seen that for a long while but now energised to find and watch again.
    Cheers! Tim

  2. Always interested to hear about other people’s EOTR experiences. We overlapped a little I think I most regret not seeing Laura Jean & Macie Stewart but you can’t fit everything in. Had a lovely weekend all the same.

    1. Great to hear you enjoyed it. Sorry about the VAR decision at the City v Fulham game !

The line-up lacked familiar names, particularly further down the card, but when I streamed an album’s worth of each artist it all seemed to make sense. Hilariously, on the EOTR forum on efestivals someone said it was too white male ! 80%+ of what I watched was female-led, and then there was plenty of Afro & Asian gems. Macie Stewart & her sax player was stunning.

  3. Since I installed 1 GB fiber broadband here at the abode; I have too many choices for radio stations, both terrestrial and internet-based. I use the Online Radio Box W-WW site to try and collate all of them.
I have fifty-three stations officially “followed”, and another seventy-four sporadically listened to. I appreciate stations that are eclectic.
