Commandeering the jukebox in the 3 Lions, Godalming

Today’s post comes to you courtesy of the Museum, a (now) Butcombe pub in Cranborne Chase. Look very closely at the little jars below; they’ll become relevant when I get to my reports from End of the Road.

The Museum one of the poshest pubs ever to grace the GBG.

My next pub isn’t posh, but it is Proper.

August 2023. Godalming.

The walk back to our campervan from central Godalming takes you past some interesting old pubs,

and a new housing development Mrs RM described as a “pigeon home”.

I sort of see her point.

Common sense said “have an early night”. But could you walk past a pub like the Three Lions ?

Well, no, obviously not. It’s not just that golden light, either.

Folk seemed to be having fun inside, and you know what Mrs RM thinks of fun. My photos skilfully fail to capture that “fun”, I feel.

One handpump dispensing an OK Spitfire

and a bloke announcing himself as “the local pisshead” commandeering the jukebox and playing the Undertones back catalogue amongst other gems.

Always good to go a pub with a proper jukebox and “proper” handwash.

The jukebox commander got chatting to us.

“Here. You choose one.

I know better than to interrupt “the local pisshead” in full flow so stuck a quid in and asked him what he wanted. Johnny Cash, it turned out.

A woman asked for a large glass of wine, a bloke shouted “oh yeah” and although it was pretty magical we decided to leave for the dogging matinee.

By the by, what on earth is the circle below ?

  1. Ah, Scratchers (as it’s known locally). Good for live music, less so for beer. Personally, I wouldn’t peg it as the most basic. Probably ahead of the Leathern Bottle and possibly the White Hart, depending on your criteria of basic…

As an aside, I know two of the people in the photos. Next time I see them, I’ll be sure to let them know that they’re now more famous than anyone ever thought they’d be!

  2. Hmm I don’t think you have been in this pub at say 5pm or even the weekend and especially Sunday when the Carvery is running. I personally think the beer here is spot on, Also Clive sitting at the bar and Les is an institution ( this pisshead as you put him and he may have at some point) and has been drinking in the pub for over 30 years!! The food is good value and also very tasty and also its a very friendly pub. Retired Martin you are nothing but an old grump!
