August 2023. Royal Leamington Spa.
Not a great day for my meticulously planned diet, to be honest.
Having turned down the Doom Bar in east Leamington’s “Proper Pubs” I somehow got distracted by the poshest pub on the Parade.

In my defence, it’s in the GBG, and I feel obliged to report on the state of Spoons Guide entries (mixed), and of course whether the Abbot is drinking well.

But first things first. £2.88 for Abbot and Doom Bar only 22p less ? It’s a scandal.
The Abbot this time was worth it’s awards, cool and smooth (3.5).

I’d found a good place to eavesdrop on posh students, and was in no hurry to leave.
It would have been a good time to eat, but there are rules, and Rule 73 is “Always try the local Chinese takeaway.
I perused the “Regional” craft list, quite a rarity in Spoons these days,

and then went for the one in the middle of the Top Brands.

What’s that bloke’s hand doing ?

A Proper beer, made with actual ingredients (including water).

Don’t judge me.
Well, you said you wanted Chinese food. So, a rice beer seems appropriate.

Why does everyone have a downer on rice. Rice is life.

“Don’t judge me”? Well, who am I to judge you. But the least I expect from whoever writes this stuff on behalf of Retired Martin is a description of the lacings and a score on the National Rice Beer Scoring System.
I feel like I’ve been short-changed.

OK, you have to guess who wrote that comment at 4.01pm. First prize: the dregs from a bottle of Doom Bar.

Now I can understand having a go at the keg murk, if only for experimental reasons or just novelty, but American Bud? Really?

I think there’s been a change in the way your blog accepts comments. It’s now giving me a “Log in to leave a reply. (optional)” message, which I didn’t realise at first meant losing my name!

Don’t know why that came through as anonymous, it was I, #notyetquiteretiredBill. Still, American Bud?

BTW the previous Anonymous at 5:30pm was someone else. But you already knew that because there was no “partly used bottle of Doom Bar” on offer.

“£2.88 for Abbot and Doom Bar only 22p less ?” – but Doom Bar as the top selling cask beer is recognised as a premium product and priced accordingly.
Craft Union offer far better value, top notch Draught Bass at £2.45, and Tribute for £2.55, in Rugeley’s Crown Inn yesterday and a cheery “Hello Lovely” from the barmaid/lessee on walking up the bar.
