WRECSAM WITHOUT A FILM CREW

August 2023. “Greater” Wrexham/Wrecsam.

Yes ! A trip to the Hollywood village that is “New” Wrexham.

Never mind Ryan Reynolds (who ?) and Rob McElhenny (who ?), the appeal of Wrexham can be best gauged in the recent tour dates for my favourite Canadian songstress of 2023;

Haley why you spend all your time in Wrexham and not play in Carluke ? etc etc

But what about the border villages along the Dee ?

Five years ago the the residents of Farndon (England) would have stared across the river at the cows in Holt (Wales) and looked down at them and their simple ways.

But now Wrexham is THE place in the UK to visit, and Farndon residents have to support Chester FC which can’t be fun.

Holt has the castle,

the big stump in the middle,

and a good cafe called Maggies with yummie Bakewell tart.

Though surely Bakewell tart in Wales is cultural appropriation.

Back in England, the Hare feels very Cheshire.

What are the first three words that spring to mind when you see these pictures ?

Well, apparently run by the founder of Brunning and Price, so I guess that’s allowable cultural appropriation. And it looked a very lovely setting for lunch.

I’m drawn to the handpump for the homebrew that looks like my prefects badge from 1980 (except that one was red), and get treated to extensive tasting notes from a gem of a landlady.

That hard sell worked on me, but possibly not enough diners at the Hare, as lacked that last degree of crispness to push it to NBSS 3.

And as you’ll know, that gap between NBSS 2.5 and 3 is a chasm as wide as the Dee.

  1. Who goes to Wrexham without a film crew these days?
Seriously, although Rob ‘n’ Ryan have done wonders for the football club and, by extension, the town, the real heroes are the fans who put their hands in their pockets, remortgaged their houses, gave their life savings, to raise over £100K in 24 hours to save Wrexham AFC from going under.

  2. I picked up a bottle of Wrexham Lager at Home Bargains the other day – when I was still allowed out of the house. I hadn’t realised, until Google came to my rescue, that the brewery had been resurrected. The beer itself was quite drinkable, and given its bargain price, I shall pick up a few more – when I’m released from quarantine.

In the meantime I shall leave you to your latest, angst-ridden, teenage songstress!
