August 2023. Whalley.
Whalley had looked such a genteel little village when we arrived. Hardly a soul, free parking by the Martyrs church,

black and white quintessential Englishness,

parish church dating back to 628 (AD),

and a main street majoring on jewellery and bridal make-up.

The highlight, breakfast pastries at the Abbey aside, is the viaduct on loan from Stockport for the summer season;

We took a walk out of town over the Calder towards Billington, attracted by the form of a man turned to silver when he asked for a taster in 1977.

Of course, asking for a taster is now not only allowed, it’s compulsory.
No chance of a taster in the Dog, Whalley’s stalwart GBG entry.

In fact, no chance of a beer at all, and all sitting and standing space was taken by humans and canines.

We gave up and called it a night. I’ve never seen pubs so busy. Perhaps people only come out at the weekend. Perhaps folk travel on the train to Whalley and Clitheroe like they take the train from Newcastle to Corbridge and Hexham on a Saturday night for a civilised pint.

But as the mature lady puked up outside the smart Swan Hotel at 8pm, civilised wasn’t the word that came to mind.
They have an odd take on recycling in the Ribble Valley

That’s the other Calder, which confusingly starts from the same watershed as the proper one, which runs through – sometimes over – Hebden Bridge, Halifax, etc. (I think I might have read somewhere.) Perhaps.
