A Wetherspoons in the Beer Guide in Liverpool ? ANOTHER one ?

July 2023. Liverpool.

Not a lot to say about the second new Beer Guide pub in central Liverpool, 57 seconds read at most, I reckon.

57 seconds is enough to get from the Denbigh Castle to the Captain Alexander,

IF you don’t stop to take photos on the way,

and wait for the Red man to go Green at crossings.

It was a great night to see the Three Graces,

and a shame I had to coax Mrs RM into one of a dozen Spoons in the ‘Pool.

But the Capt. Alex is newish and shiny and Liverpool CAMRA seem to welcome new and shiny things into the Beer Guide.

And I’d rather branches recognised good beer quality in chain pubs than just stuck to free houses with slow-selling beer from railway arches,

it’s just that the Salopian Oracle was very 2.5. And while CAMRA says NBSS 2.5 means an adequately kept pint, it doesn’t really, does it ?

Mrs RM had joined me at the bar to request a pizza and glass of wine meal deal (£12.05, is that expensive ?), which had me scurrying for the CAMRA vouchers while she scurried back to find out what table she was at. Can’t take her anywhere.

What on earth can you write about a Spoons ? Err, the toilets are downstairs ?

No queues though, even though it was nicely busy.

I’d finished the Salopian (still 2.5) before her veggie pizza arrived, and was almost minded to stay until it did, but Google was telling me the train to Formby left in 7 minutes, and the Merseyrail to Formby waits for no man.

    1. Yes, this is one of the problems with the NBSS. I agree that 2.5 is not “adequate”, especially in a GBG pub. A pub in the guide should be serving beer that grabs your attention in a good way.
