June 2023. Winchelsea.
A walk in the June heat around WinChelsea, two words rarely seen in the same sentence since Lampard took over.

It’s a mini-Rye, a town on a hill with a pub and a church and some ruins.

You can walk its streets in 10 minutes, but the lanes south of town to the Pett Levels are deserted and gorgeous.

Too hot for those, so we stuck to St Thomas’s, as my recent series of church-based posts have met such universal acclaim*.

Well, this is a cracker.

Note again the DIY donation box at the unmanned (unpriested ?) entrance.

Some of the best windows anywhere,

the actual organ on which Sky’s 1980 No.5 hit “Toccata & Fugue” was recorded (possibly).

The “Bible Page of the Day” is Number 1061, a good year, and warns against visits to Sodom and Gomorrah, neither of which feature in the latest GBG.

“What’s behind the curtain, Retired Martin ?”,

NEVER look behind the curtain, or you’ll turn to stone like these two;

Outside, we’re joined by a couple of Old Boys looking for Spike Milligan’s gravestone, and luckily I had no idea where it was either so was able to bluff it out until Mrs RM said “It’s here, duh“.

One of the most famous graves in the country. You know what it says;
“Dúirt mé leat go raibh mé breoite“
Sadly, Rod Hull’s grave is unmarked. I’ve no idea what happened to Emu.
*They really haven’t, because you’re all philistines. Or because pubs are more entertaining, who knows.
Love the exterior of this church.

“The church was built at the same time as the town itself but we cannot be sure whether the whole of it was ever built. Today only the chancel and chapels remain in use. The transepts are in ruins and there is no evidence to be seen of a nave.” https://www.winchelsea.com/the-town-story/town-trail/st-thomas-church/
It’s definitely got that unfinished look about it, Dave, and it’s hard to imagine a more sleepy place.

I suppose Emu is dead now, but 20 years ago, two walkers along the Royal Military Canal were ambushed by a large bird-like creature. One of them lost an eye and a shoe. The other broke four fingers on his left hand. That was probably Emu.

“a large bird-like creature” ? That would be a bird.

It’s that subtle difference between ill and sick , isn’t it?

There aren’t nearly enough pictures of the late Spike Milligan’s grave on Martin’s blog, so here’s one from an appropriately reverential angle:
The Best at the New Inn was in good enough nick, but when it became clear that we weren’t eating we were directed to the garden, which, it has to be said, is rather a nice one.
