DEAL SHIP OR NO DEAL SHIP ?

June 2023. Deal.

Middle Street in Deal is one of the greatest streets in the world, along with one of those flowered covered lanes up the hill in Bergen and the one with Uerige on it in Dusseldorf. You’ll have your own favourite, I guess.

Having bagged the tick, Mrs RM and I strolled the prom and admired the art deco and pastel colours.

and revisited the spot on the pebbles where we took one of our favourite photos of James that has been forced on grandparents via calendars ever since.

Middle Street itself was virtually deserted, part of its appeal,

and the only question was whether I’d be able to walk past the Ship before heading back to the station.

You’re surely not going to walk past that pub ?” said Mrs RM, a good judge of character.

That’s the pub that Dick Southworth got told off for taking a pint back” I said.

Well, that’s settled then. Six years is too long to bear a grudge.

Well, the pub’s not changed a jot.

Still an estimable beer list;

Godsons ? Charrington ? Green King ? It’s like the Beer Orders never happened.

Oh well, the actual beer list is a bit dominated by Gadds. Which is fine.

I was sorely tempted to have “She Sells Seashells” and take it back to see what happens, but that’s childish. The No. 5 was full-bodied and rich enough, a firm NBSS 3 just as everything was on that fateful afternoon in 2017.

Keen pricing, too, and a soundtrack heavy on 1979 disco.

You can trust a pub who plays 1979 disco, however disinterested your clientele.

Two Old Boys on Fosters, one lad on Guinness, a Proper Pub on a Wednesday afternoon.

Whether the Southworths will forgive it is another matter; I think I just might.

With 20 minutes till the train to Ashford, we passed on pool at the Royal.

    1. But I will still have to stop in whenever in Deal. Still one of my favourite* pubs.

*Go back and read all of RM’s posts from this week, you will find the answer.

  1. Martin writes them quicker than most people can read them, so the chances of ever being up to date with his blog are pretty minimal.

Blink and there’s another couple of posts added! 😊
