May 2023.
Amazing how many gorgeous towns and pubs there are within spitting distance of Telford New Town.

Much Wenlock, who I always assumed to be a Wolves centre-half from Victorian times, gains a second new Guide entry this decade, and an unlikely one in the Gaskell Arms.

Old-fashioned looking hotels for gentlefolk don’t tend to make the Guide, but GBG23 has delivered as wide a range of new entries as I can ever remember.
Loads of nice things said about the hotel on Google, notably by Alex.

Sounds a bit gushing*, doesn’t it ?
And there’s nothing about the beer range,

or the furnishings,

that immediately says classic.
But the welcome really was stunning.
It’s something Tandleman often talks about, the art of hospitality, of making you feel valuable.
I don’t remember the other customers fussing about bills, but I do remember chatting about pens and the cost of buying change and being called “My lovely” at the bar.

And I recall a cool and sherberty Town Crier (3.5),

and the calming sound of birds and running water (a double-edged sword when you’re our age, that running water).

And what’s wrong with lovely ?
*No, I didn’t have the mushroom omelette, sorry Alex.
