CASK IS BACK (?)

5 days in, 15 pubs, 15 pints. I’m saving pubs, are you?

This weekend I’ll take a break, and leave it to the weekend drinkers to pick up the baton.

I’ve enjoyed the pub gardens, and the VE Day spirit, and the banter, but I haven’t seen all this local cask that Beer Twitter bangs on about.

In fact, in the first dozen pubs the standard choice was John Smiths Smooth or Doom Bar, Staropramen or Abbot.

But, just like that first week back last July, the quality of the real ale has been sensational, with the best pints of Greene King IPA, and Abbott, and Jaipur I’ve had in years.

Less choice? Yes, but more quality. Win, win.

  1. I have had some excellent local beers in this first week: Tapped Mojo 3.6% brewed and drunk at (or just outside the front door of) the Sheffield Tap; Kelham Island Best Bitter 3.8% brewed next door to and drunk in the garden of the Fat Cat; Loxley Halliday Bitter 4.0% brewed just on the edge of Sheffield and drunk in the car park of the Raven Inn; and not local but still excellent, Marble Bitter 4.0% drunk in the small back yard of the Beer House on Ecclesall Road, having made the journey over the Pennines from Manchester.

  2. Just the 2 pubs for us -all cask & fairly local.A visit to our “local ” had to be made -The Rocking Robin -beers on offer were Robin Reliant (their own ) & the server advised us that there was also a “pale ale ” on offer- my husband fancied some & asked what it was -“Sorry I don’t know ” was the reply -she came back later & told us it was Old Dairy & my husband enjoyed it.We probably won’t return -the regulars were all gathered on a terrace,so social distancing & we even saw one kiss the landlady -i know this makes me sound a bit po faced but I just didn’t think the staff were bothered about the way all & sundry were gathered ,standing up,in large groups. .The Halfway House was good though although the beer garden has lost the tatty charm it used to have -it was huge & heaving but seemed well organised-queue for beer (5 casks ) & my wine was delivered from a different bar.It was nice to have our regular Friday jaunt back !

    I’m… building my own? 😉

    “and the VE Day spirit”

    Nice turn of phrase. 🙂

    Maybe it’s just in London?

Good lord man! You’re making a case for the lockdowns to continue in a way!

There’s a… lesson to be learned?
    (i.e. Martin’s rule of hand pumps) 🙂

    Cheers

  4. Have managed two sneaky pints outside the Queens Head Kingsnorth during the week, following visits to the doctor about my back problem (thankfully improving). One of Harvey’s and one of Landlord.
