LOST IN A FOREST. NEAR YEOVIL

So another Glastonbury ends with entitled 22 year olds perched on new boyfriend’s shoulders drinking Prosecco and listening to a 60 year old goth from Crawley.

Yes, Robert Smith of the Cure (last album 11 years ago made No. 33), is older than Mudgie. And looks it.

But they were great, back in the days BRAPA was a baby.

I was humming “A Forest” on The Walk to my next Dorset tick.

“Glamping”
The Walk

Cheddington says the Guide, but Winyard’s Gap is resolutely a roadside pub, with the village a good mile from the A356.

Fantastic views from the pub garden (top) ,

and also along the springy ridge to one of the prettiest villages I’ve stumbled across using the Guide.

That way

The pub itself looks solid and unspoilt.

But by 2pm the diners had gone and no-one else was walking out here for a half of that weird tasting real ale with the silly name. But five beers, heh?

Branscombe weird but decent, NBSS 3

My notes say, not a lot really.

Staff pleasant, inappropriate Hi-NRG soundtrack (Hazel Dean? ), and relief that some beer on this trip was edging above 2.5.

Interesting seating

Back in February I took Simon round some Proper Pubs in North Dorset where weird stuff happened.

This lot were all gastromax.

Still, one new brand of handwash to tick off my list. And for once it described my mood perfectly.

  1. Your picture reminds me, Martin, of the clergyman, who urged abstinence on the part of his flock, but who enjoyed a drink himself. When challenged on the point by one of them, he replied “when did you last see a signpost, walking in the direction it pointed?”

      1. You did stay for the definition. It’s still ongoing, and everything you think has happened since then (AGM 2014) has been a nightmare.
I’m also sure that quite a lot of the beer you buy tastes somewhat closer to cider than it would be in a perfect world.

  2. To be fair, Robert Smith’s voice has held out much better than many of his contemporaries!

I write this from a fairly busy pub with 6 pumps (4 beers on at present) with a lacklustre pint, wishing we were still in the days of mild and bitter (or mixed if you were living dangerously!)…

  3. ““Glamping””

I was going to roll my eyes when I saw that on the map. But then I thought to myself; “Makes sense in a way. Those who were ‘camp’ back in the day were pretty flamboyant. A bit serendipitous to make camping striking elaborate with glamping. 🙂

“Fantastic views from the pub garden (top)”

And from photo directly below. That’s a typical British (southern) scene.

    “That way”

I’m going to use the photo below (of the cottage?) to convince my wife we don’t need to weed as much in the garden. 😉

    “But five beers, heh?”

It appears that at least one of those five is a cider.
(which reminds me; do you have a cider over there called ‘slip it in’?) 😉

    “Interesting seating”

I like the low high chair. 🙂

    “This lot were all gastromax.”

That’s partly because Simon wasn’t with you.

“And for once it described my mood perfectly.”

Calm? Or Green due to forgoing motorised transport and walking instead?

Oh, and does anyone ever use the hand and body wash to, in fact, wash their body?

    Cheers

  4. I imagine Robert Smith has taken a lot more drugs than me. But on the other hand I’m certain I’ve drunk a lot more OBB 😊🍺

  5. I’ve spent many years listening to Macca’s When I’m 64 wondering what it would be like to be an old bastard of 64.
In 15 minutes Greek time that moment arrives.
It’s been a great day – my oldest got his 2:1 AND his first salaried job offer.
And I’m sat in a nice bar sipping Johnnie Walker Red Label wondering how the hell I even managed to get to this age.
Pie-Tin’s secret, indisputable rule is that God always looks after fools and drunks.
As I’m both I feel double blessed.
