COME AND GET ‘EM, SOUTHWORTHS

Yes, it’s the highlight of Mrs RM’s housecleaning year as the the Southworth clan set off from Chicago and Minneapolis, preparing mentally to take back duff pints in Pembroke and be told

“It’s real ale. Its supposed to taste like that.”

I’m sure they’ll find good pubs in West Wales, which I believe may have some non-beery appeal as well.

If the welcome is as good as I’ve had in pubs this year they’ll be happy.

They’ll return with tummies full of beer and curry, and a CAMRA AGM bag full of branch magazines.

Note my instruction to Mrs RM not to bin it. I’ll probably leave it on the train to Swansea now.

There’s a few more from Scotland this year. It’s good to know the miracle of the printed word has arrived north of the border.

I’d be lying if I said I’d read them all, there’s too much about breweries for my liking. But the quality remains high, and not just in Newbury and Stockport where Mudgie’s articles are syndicated.

Matthew Lawrenson will be staggered to here that Ale Cry is high on my league table, and MerseyAle has reinvented itself.

I just wish they didn’t all have so many new micropubs to report.

    1. Many people are unaware, that unusually for a motorway service station, the two sites at Strensham, separately serving northbound and southbound travellers, are about half a mile apart, due to the proximity of junction 8 for the M50 motorway.

  1. The day has finally arrived. The first pint will soon be in reach. I remember almost making it to your house after one of those cleanings.

  3. One of my minor hobby-ettes is moving local CAMRA newsletters around the country. A Beer Around Ere in The Pelican Gloucester, probably me. Favourite mag is Hereford Hopvine because so much of it is devoted to pubs, with a healthy cider content too. Like you, skip past the beer and brewery space-filler material.

  4. I love being able to pass things on like this (sadly our CAMRA mags all go to the tip ) A mate of ours used to pass Rugby League mags on for our lad -he still has them -hundreds -& refuses to dump them -perhaps I should start charging for storage !
