I’m writing this listening to Pellegrini’s West Ham beating Everton, so here’s some proper Hammers art I saw walking up Princess Street.

On from the Grey Horse to the Gas Lamp, the sort of Beer Guide contrast you still get in central Manchester. A bit like going from the Templar to North Bar in that little town on the wrong side of the Pennines.
In fact the only things the Gas Lamp and Grey Horse have in common are that they’re new to the Beer Guide and offer 10% CAMRA Discount. And serve NBSS 3.5 beer, which is more than Good enough. I do hope that setting up your own brewery isn’t really necessary to get a pub in the Guide.

A Manc pub I haven’t done before. But then I haven’t been in the Sawyer’s either; what have I missed ?

The Gas Lamp was relatively quiet on Saturday, possibly because I’m not the only one who’s never noticed it. There’s one couple near the bar, and a group or two in the atmospheric back room who look sheepish when I peep my head round the door.

I like the spartan décor and decoration. There’s a touch of Indyman Victorian Baths about it.

Loads of beers, but pleasingly just the three pumps, one of which (Squawk) I didn’t notice till too late. Mrs RM would have loved all those strong beers.

Cheery barmaid, eclectic soundtrack (OK, it was jazz), and a cool pale pint from Beatnikz Republic that was unbeatable (NBSS 3.5+). How does Manchester keep beer so cool ?
A great drinking den, up there with Cask or Font down the road.
So my great start to GBG 19 continued, when will it end ? (Ten points).
I’ll be checking this place out next month, looks ok.

Mrs RM is a true pubman. I also think I read that Mark Twain stayed in the Sawyers once. On his famous reading tour of the UK. That’s a BRAPA fact…

Didn’t it also inspire “Tom Sawyer” by Rush ?

I’m sure the lyrics of that are written about a CAMRA member. “Always hopeful yet discontent, he knows changes aren’t permanent. But change is”. Presumably that 1p in Spoons.

Where will it end? Presumably with consecutive visits to several micropubs which are closed during advertised opening hours.

Or who simply do not advertise their opening hours ?

Or who simply do not open at all (other than the first Friday of the month, 4.00pm until 5.00pm, Summer months only) ?

Don’t be silly, they are only open on “that” Friday evening in December, 16:00 – 20:00.

Well, in this instance, because it’s in the cellar? 🙂
“when will it end ?”
I think that’s five so far so… (un)lucky 13?

“I suggest you follow something more intellectually stimulating.”
Not to worry. When I need a change of pace (i.e. intellectually stimulating) I go watch some Monty Python Gumby YouTube vids. 🙂

it will end in a pub with more handpumps than punters…I don’t like West Ham either for the record!

Everyone likes West Ham. Even Milwall.

They invaded St Andrew’s pitch in FA Cup in 1985 and also have a chairman that most Blues fans secretly wish was still here! And they play in claret and blue…need I go on

They spoiled what has been an otherwise profitable football weekend for me – I thought Everton win was a knocking bet at evs.

Brewery needed …no, just the discount

Massive coincidence. I didn’t ask for discount in either place by the way,

I think I was one of the couple in the back room looking sheepish! We thought that some bloke had wandered in looking for the Gents and in his embarrassment had started randomly snapping photos. Anyway agree the Beatnikz Republic pale ale was excellent.

To be fair “sheepish” would describe me perfectly ! As would random. Glad that’s two votes for the Beatnikz.

Glad to see it’s still going strong.. they used to sell one of my favourites, a bohemia regent dark lager that tasted like bonfire toffee. The oast house round the corner used to be decent as well back in the day
