Another dull walk through the northern suburbs of Bournemouth to another dull micro pub with dull folk talking about other dull micro pubs, then.
Er, no.

The Firkin Shed, tucked between station and Dean Court Nou, is a bit overkill (almost literally), a bit like the Post Office place in Warwick or the Fez or any of the Baker Street fun pubs in Middlesbrough.
But this is Bournemouth, where you expect decorum and chain pubs.

I arrived in the Golden Hour, just before 5, along with all the characters who presumably all drank in the secret pubs on Brownsea Island, or at least Tucker’s Grave, before micros were invented.

Actually, no. The “Chap with excellent hat” in the first photo gave me a full history of his colourful drinking career while we waited for the Landlady to attend to important matters downstairs (as it were). Ten minutes is an awfully long time, and led to much furious tapping of coins (of some vintage) on the bar top.

Hat Man was on the hard cider (probably orange), which seemed a good idea. But my GBG tick depended on the real ale, and the Smash Mosaic got recommended by a random recommending bloke behind me. It was great, to be fair (NBSS 3.5). I drunk it at the bar as Hat Man took his tale beyond 1998, and was mildly distraught he didn’t remember the faintly absurd Cottonwood Hotel.

Then some South African lads came in, and weighed up which were the strongest beers to start their evening on. This is no middle-aged drinking club.
Cider Man’s hat looks even better from the other side. I bet he’s still there when BRAPA turns up.

That blackboard looks rather like “Keg v. Cask” 😉

So it does !
Looking at that now, I remember just how hard to read that board was without the benefit of handpumps. Big labels, small labels, and impossible to ascertain anything about the beers themselves.

I’m hoping those 2 plastic bottles contain cider, but considering the demographic of Bournemouth…

Isn’t a pony tail compulsory with a hat like that ?
Or maybe that’s just the other side of Hampshire.

“Only pub snack is confiscated mobile phones”
The way his eyelids are held up are we sure that’s not an updated Clockwork Orange?
“along with all the characters who presumably all drank in the secret pubs on Brownsea Island”
(slow golf clap)
A subtle reference to your Sept 4th Poole post since this is about the Firkin. 🙂
“while we waited for the Landlady to attend to important matters downstairs (as it were). ”
Thanks for not mentioning that. I’d rather not hear about her plumbing problems (as it were). 😉
“Unique jam jars”
You sure that’s not the cider equivalent?
“Cider Man’s hat looks even better from the other side. ”
Stands to reason dunnit? Cider man looks better from the other side(r). 🙂
Cheers

I wish you’d just heard the little smirk as I read that last (cider) line, Russ.

That’s a proper pub – not a Micro. That photo is the scariest I have ever seen on a pub blog!!!

I live in Bournemouth and have never heard of this place – defiantly need to check it out, it looks mad (in a good way)

It’s relatively new, Nic, and Bournemouth has a lot of suburbs that remain mysteries to me. If you do go, would be keen to read a report on your excellent blog – https://atwentysomethinglesbian.com/

I was in the Firkin Shed eighteen months ago and think it opened in 2015 so it is relatively new, certainly much newer than the nearby Cricketers Arms which I much preferred.
