A few short posts now, as anything over 300 words gets exhausting in this heat. Please send your rain, Professor Pie-Tin. (NB: It came ten minutes after posting, in a deluge).
Good question from Wickingman in the comments in the last post, asking which counties are most reliable for beer quality (at point of dispense, obvs Bass is the best in a brewery)
Gloucestershire is a middling county in many respects, though I rate the countryside south of Stroud very highly. Who could fail to fall for the charms of North Nibley, Uley and Hetty Pegler’s Tump ?

Even the expected 3,000 Tranmere fans in the Forest Green FC away end next season won’t really boost tourism this far out of the Cotswolds proper, lacking the flat whites, crème fraiche and pashmina shops of Cirencester, and with some unexpectedly basic pubs.
It’s also a bit off-putting that Wotton-under-Edge lacks that second “o” that makes pronunciation easier.

But it’s a wonderful town to walk round and spot buildings that pre-date Craft beer.

Wikipedia tells me the town is well served, with “Kebab, Pizza and Chinese Takeaways”, proving the town knows what’s important. “The town can be quite lively at night” it threatens, objectively.
Elsewhere, the local newspaper has unparalleled coverage of a heartbreaking missing cat drama.

In next week’s Gazette, “Nibley man late home for tea”

I enjoyed the Gazette in the Royal Oak, a haven for the BBB brigade.

Wait, what’s that being poured. Yes, only the UK’s top-selling beer. Anyone who tells me I should have had Exmoor as it’s local has an odd sense of geography.
Anyway, a decent Doom (NBSS 3) enjoyed in the suntrap of a garden, but I attract unwarranted attention by snapping the Tetley sign, so it’s time to move on before the town “gets lively”.

“It’s also a bit off-putting that Wotton-under-Edge lacks that second “o” that makes pronunciation easier” , ah, yes, but in harsher times long before it thought of attracting tourists it was actually, with good reason, Rotten-under-Edge, and not many people now know that. .

It may not be local but I would have definitely gone for the Exmoor. Fox because its a cunningly crafted ale.. https://www.exmoorales.co.uk/index.php?route=information/ales&ales_id=5

Never enjoyed Exmoor. Or many of the Somerset & Devon beers, bar Otter. Possibly more about the pubs than the beer.

I much preferred Exmoor, Cotleigh and Butcombe to Otter – but it wouldn’t do for us all to like the same beers.

Yes in certain pubs photos need to be selective!

The same for Guinness apparently.
“Who could fail to fall for the charms of North Nibley, Uley and Hetty Pegler’s Tump ?”
After reading that there is no need for me to look further on the map. 🙂
“and spot buildings that pre-date Craft beer.”
Are we sure that pre-dates Craft? For, like craft, they don’t show the hours they’re open. 😉
“High drama”
I had to chuckle at the photo that shows her “with another one of her cats”. 🙂
“Yes, only the UK’s top-selling beer. ”
Doom Bar beats out Carling?
““Mummy, why is that strange man photographing mirrors ?””
Pfft. He’s not photographing mirrors. He’s adding yet another piece to the puzzle that, once complete, will show us what he looks like. 🙂
Cheers

Four is too many, but I must admit that I do like that selection of ales.

Me too. They were selling quick enough, and because they’re better known beers I guess none of them were getting passed over.

Can’t help thinking the investigative reporter assigned to the “Nibley man late home for tea” story will find that it has something to do with having found a pub with good Bass.
And is there a town name any more quintessentially English than “Wotton-under-Edge?”
Have had a lovely time catching up on your recent posts; thanks as always for the time and care you put into this blog, both the writing and the photos.

Ha ! Quintessentially English indeed, and not overrun by tourists or pub bloggers, either.

Forest Green away is on a Tuesday sadly. Though the wait for a bus back to Stroud last time put me off visiting again anyway.Hopefully this new eco-ground near the M5 will materialise with an inbuilt Brewhouse and Kitchen.
