SLIP SLIDING AWAY

Crash

I’m told my lack of chronological authenticity is a problem for some, so with that in mind here’s a report from 8.24pm tonight.  2.15pm to 8.23pm can go hang.

Mrs RM and I spent the afternoon with the lovely Southworths, seemingly recovered from their evening with BRAPA, who seems tightlipped about the event.

Last train to chavville

Dick and Dave leave our lovely country tomorrow, returning to the welcoming bosom of President Trump and lots of cool, fizzy beer.

We left our two favourite cask dinosaurs at Kings Cross,

but only after a last pint in the Scottish Stores, my favourite pub not in the Beer Guide.

A curate’s egg of a pub, this one

More to the point, BRAPA’s favourite not in the Guide, and that counts for a lot.  And also because the other GBG pubs round the Cross (as the kids call it) are dreary.

It looked as pubby as ever; a rambling, historic place for everyone avoiding that station pub (we’d all been in that one for a free wee).

Good beer range too.

Beer you’ve heard of if you read Ullage

Mrs RM took her Oyster Stout to the last free table, took a sip, put it on the middle of the table.  And it slid right off.

SMASH !

Dave took the photo at the top. Forensic experts may detect the slope, but our explanation cut no ice with the bar staff who overruled the first lady we spoke to and refused to give us a free replacement.  Simon would have loved the furore.

A shame, because that Oyster Stout was the best beer in London today(NBSS 4).  But how could I ever recommend for the Guide a pub with sloping tables ?

  1. “seemingly recovered from their evening with BRAPA, who seems tightlipped about the event.”

Thanks for that. Si mentioned it in his May wrap up and I thought I’d missed it while at me Mum’s at the beginning of May.

    “our two favourite cask dinosaurs”

Dick and Dave the dinosaurs; there’s a possible television pilot there. 😉

“A curate’s egg of a pub, this one”

From the picture on the sign it must have been a bugger buying groceries in Scotland back in the day. 😋

“Beer you’ve heard of if you read Ullage”

Can I take umbrage at the suggestion I’ve read Ullage? 😏

“Mrs RM took her Oyster Stout to the last free table, ”

She’s very good at snagging the last table. 👍

“who overruled the first lady we spoke to and refused to give us a free replacement.”

    Stupid buggers. 😒

“Simon would have loved the furore.”

He should do the same next time he’s there and see if the outcome is different. 😎

    Cheers

    1. Dick didn’t know the dimensions of a football pitch though, which is really embarrassing. I know all about their American football and the number of allowed ad breaks.

      1. Everyone knows the allowed number of commercials/game is 357 per hour. I think Congress passed that as the minimum a few years back…

  2. I remember Dick and Dave being mentioned by Robbie Williams in the dinosaur sketch in Mrs Doubtfire. A line about (Scottish accent), “I Otter be having a pint of Bass while I roam the plains”.

  3. Scottish Stores -one of our favourites -always fancy checking out the pie shop opposite but not achieved it yet !

    1. Ooh, haven’t noticed the pie shop, the burritos across from Scottish Stores good though. Glad you like the Stores as much as Simon and I, despite our “slip” yesterday.

  4. Never registered Scottish Stores doesn’t make GBG – just assumed it would be in. Must have National Inventory status, surely?
Never understood why Mabel’s Tavern in that area gets in year after year. Uninspiring pub, leaving aside the mostly uninspiring Shepherd Neame beers.

    1. It’s on the Regional Inventory for its unique sloping tables.

Yes, Mabel’s is an oddity. I do like Sheps, but can’t say I’ve had inspiring beer there. “Local favourite”.
