Well, perhaps there is. I didn’t do a thorough stocktake. I’d hate to think that Dunbarians (?) are missing out on the UK’s best-selling ale.

Some good looking pubs though, as I headed back to the coast for my other GBG tick (that I was hoping wasn’t working on a 12-2 timetable). Perhaps the keg micropub * at the station will succumb to public demand and get in the Beer Guide with just Doom on, served through an autovac.

The Volunteer serves beer through an autovac. Not that that concerns the Old Boys drinking Tennents on the sun lounge, I guess.

This is a cracker of a seaside local, the sort of place you used to get in the Guide on Thanet before the micros invaded. Every room oozed Proper Pub character, lacking only a bit of custom. But it was 3pm, to be fair.

Cheery service, and more local beers, but I’d heard of these.

My half of Atlas Wayfarer found a nice spot next to the games machine, and I admired the cool and chewy beer.

But I hadn’t come to the ends of the earth not to drink Belhaven, and I set off to find some.
* There’s another keg-only Scottish micro I passed on my southward journey. Ten points if anyone can guess it.
A beauty!

And a yard of ale glass.
You don’t see a lot of them around these days.
I briefly held the college record in my first year at Uni before it was snatched away by the son of a man who used to advertise double glazing with a falling feather on the telly.
And when I say snatched I mean he absolutely mullahed me.
Happy days.

Double glazing men, all the same.

“Proper faded red”
And harsh penalties apparently if you take your alcohol off the patio.

Yep, that Pepsi one on the right is pretty popular the world over. 😉

Surely it’s the house John Muir once slept in? 😉

Pepsi beer, must be a goer.
I thought John Muir slept everywhere. Or am I getting mixed up with Frank Muir ?

The only other Scottish micro pub is Rutherfords in Kelso and they definitely serve cask beer! Maybe it’s a trick question.

It’s certainly a trap, Pat. (clue there). Of course, depends how you define micro pub !

You “hadn’t come to the ends of the earth not to drink Belhaven” and I had heard that its quality had improved since being taken on by one of our favourite larger brewers.

Bit like going to Bridport and not drinking some Palmers.

Wow this one is a real beauty, and the photos you took are superb.
I love the upholstered round-seated stools you see in some pubs. Seems to me we don’t have these in American bars– the equivalent would be for high tables, and likely have a wooden seat.

Thanks Mark. This was a distinctly British pub. High tables are my bugbear !

Nice trad pub Martin. Though almost a problem with fitting a round table in a square (ok rectangular) snug there…
…and the sun terrace is not quite in keeping – might have been better with etched designs on the glass screens!

Wondered if this was possibly enhanced by a dash of Tennants from the autovac??
