Time cannot dull the frisson of excitement you get arriving in Liverpool Central, and emerging to a city determined to drink the place dry. The folk here should do a house swap with Newbury and contrast their Sunday nights.

There’s a majestic quality to the place, only partly dimmed by the chain shop horrors of Liverpool ONE.

But, as so often these days, the Beer Guide drags me out east towards the Everyman, the Catholic Cathedral and Lennon’s favourite loo (one for Mark Crilley there).

Plenty of great architecture, fewer great pubs down the nightclub central of Bold Street and Wood Street these days.

Just as Pubmeister had this year, I struggled to find Hard Time and Misery, which is somehow appropriate.

The only sad thing about it was that I was the only customer. Mind you, three would have been a crowd in the smallest single room bar I’ve ever been in. Take that, Nutshell.

Lovely barman, top beer (Big Hand, NBSS 3.5), good soundtrack (One Step Beyond).

But I was left a little bemused by the overpowering smell of incense, and the devotion to Nigel Farage.
Funny lot, the Scousers.
Thanks for the shout out, Martin. I’ve heard that if you play parts of Revolution No. 9 backwards you can hear Lennon say, “I’m going to the loo, lads, don’t let anyone touch my pint.”
I have happy memories of a trip my friend and I made to Liverpool back in 1993. We took the “Ferry cross the Mersey” and, once over there, stopped in at a pub to have a chip butty. Apparently it wasn’t a good one, so I’ve yet to have a proper example of this cuisine. 🙂
Would you say Liverpool is a great town for pubs?

Yes, I would, Mark. The Beer Guide entries have a few top many Wetherspoons and micro pubs for some folks, but the classic 60s er.a locals are still there. Great reviews on Simon’s blogs recently.
A little bit of Pool died when Cains went belly up though.

I bet it was difficult to pass Roscoe Head and not stop in. Unless, you did.

VERY difficult ! Not many other unmissable round about pubs, in the Beer Guide at least.
