CHUFFED IN CHESTER

The Merseyrail network generously takes in Chester, but misses the honeypots of Rainhill and Wavertree, so my £5.20 Daysaver couldn’t quite get me to two new micro pubs near the M57.  You can imagine my despair.

Still, I finally got to finish Cheshire at the traditionally named Goat & Munch. I remember a time when the last pub in a county would be called the Wellington or the Boat, but that’s progress for you.

Excitingly, I got off early at Bache and walked down Liverpool Road, just like the Bangles, hoping for some cutting edge street art.

No luck. Apart from this at the roundabout exit for the Morrisons.

Nice dragon as you reach town, though.

The Goat & Munch is in real backstreet Chester territory,

also known as the Garden Quarter, in some strange meaning of the word “garden”.

Perhaps this is the street art

Fittingly as we approached Star Wars Day, I then found the quirky street art.

I no longer trust signs that say “Open” on micro doors, even at 4pm on a Sunday, but regulars staring at you through the window are A GOOD SIGN.

It’s heaving, which is GOOD (for beer quality) and BAD (no seats).

More bar than micro, perhaps, though the Dortmunder Union was definitely the beer of choice. I’ve seen Hollyoaks, Chester is a proper lager stronghold.

What can I say ? They had Salopian,it was very good (NBSS 3.5), and a photo of Shaun Goater, and some thumping beats.  Chuffing good. I liked it more than BRAPA.

But. Those. Seats.

  1. You refer to “the traditionally named Goat & Munch,” and indeed I’ve encountered a fair number that include the word “goat” in some way. But “Munch” is a new one for me. Do they have an explanation for giving their pub this name?

      1. Agree with BRAPA on this one. Found too many of aspects of the micropub concept that don’t appeal (to me), when dropped in last June. And, by definition, in a micropub there’s nowhere to escape from them.
