TIRANA COMPLETE – COCKTAILS, CATHEDRALS AND CONCRETE BUNKERS. AND A CREME ECLAIR.

May 2024. Tirana. Albania.

The last of four days in Albania, all great apart from the ever-present fear of being at the wrong bus stop, and time to tick the (few) big tourist attractions.

But first, local food at EOS Mezze bar, a classy place behind Pan’s Tap with a brunch offer.

Mrs RM got Google Translate out and picked the most unpronounceable ones, always a good idea unless you’re in a Chinese restaurant..

Odd but sensational, as were the cocktails (a Negroni and an ouzo-based Nartis, sadly not scoreable on Untappd) which cost the same as the meals (about £4 each).

And then a bit of a slog back towards the central square, and a walk up the Pyramid which houses weird art. Mrs RM sat this walk out.

The Orthodox Resurrection Cathedral (2012) is one of the few real unmissable sights in Tirana,

its bell tower standing tall alongside the modern tower blocks.

We only paid for one “attraction”, BunkArt 2‘s astonishing conversion of a nuclear shelter into a memorial to the victims of state suppression,

with some genuinely harrowing modern art thrown in.

After all that, we needed a trouble-free journey back to the Airport, and a giant creme éclair for Mrs RM.

Always good to end a trip with a giant éclair.
