THE SNUG IN THE HAYMAKERS

March 2026. Chesterton.

Back down in Waterbeach, where Dad was looking better groomed than myself,

and then a catch-up with Dortmund Annie to discuss “stuff” at the Haymakers.

A possible answer to a quiz question, Milton (via Waterbeach) Brewery’s flagship is the only pub in Cambidge High Street, which is actually in the underpubbed suburb of Chesterton, where pre-Retirement Martin began his exciting career.

My only job today is as DES, with Mrs RM skipping a pint of Marcus Aurelius for wine. Wine !

I wasn’t looking forward to my options,

but German non-alcoholic Kolsch sounds a good bet, right ?

It’s just gone six, and (despite my photo) the pub is filling up with the usual Chesterton crowd, which any Cambridge readers will instantly understand. Pleasingly, more tables of women playing cards.

But Mrs RM pounces on the snug we used to take the boys in when they were starting their pubgoing careers.

It’s cosy, that’s why they call it a snug, though after an hour and a half of pizza and chat I’m starting to feel a bit squashed. Something stronger than the excellent (no really) N/A Fruh might have helped.

Richard Naisby, founder of Milton, has some of Cambridge’s great pubs, and an array of very underrated beers.

I know I’ve left, but it would be lovely if Waterbeach, New or Old, could have a Milton pub too one day.
