Roll over Beethoven. Bonn in an hour.

March 2026. Bonn. Germany.

3 nights in Cologne, 1 new city (Wuppertal), 3 revisits.

The only memory I had of former West German capital Bonn, 11 years ago on a post-exam (his, not mine) trip was a long closed kneipe, and the Haribo shop.

In 2005 James came away with a kilogram bag for a fiver; more restraint was shown now.

It’s a quaint but inessential place reminiscent of Stratford on Avon,

all Beethoven and chocolate.

And asparagus.

Nice churches, mind.

An hour will do you,

perhaps half an hour if you skip the Haribo shop,

and Beethoven’s house where he wrote the Champions League theme.

No, he didn’t really. That was Mozart.

  1. Bonn’s main architectural attractions for me were the cathedral and university (it supposedly only became the capital of West Germany because the postwar Chancellor Konrad Adenauer had happy memories of being a student there). I also popped in the town hall, a slightly surreal experience with all the photos of him and his successors meeting world leaders there.
