March 2026. Dusseldorf. Germany.

I realise some of you have never been to Uerige, one of my Top 5 pubs in the world*.

So I may struggle to explain the appeal of standing at an outside bench by the Rhine, drinking endless 0,25l measures of an Alt I can only describe as “a bit like Sam Smiths, innit ?”, waiting for an American to ask for a coffee or pay by American Express.

Our sons, after an afternoon of “cultural exploration“, had saved us a table.
But where?
“We’re inside. Back room. It’s cold outside“
Inside ? Have I really brought up two wusses to sit inside Uerige ? They’ll be buying seats for the Geese gig next.
It’s the back room, too,

somehow redeemed by the statues which show what Mrs RM and I will look like in middle-age.

There’s groups of tourists here, all ordering snacks, but it feels a bit overflow compared to the street, oddly.
It also seems to take an age to get served, and no-one wants to sit in Uerige without a beer, particularly when you’ve only had a Jever “Fun”.

Just as well the Alt is as marvellous as ever, and not much beats an afternoon with the family around a wooden barrel.
And at least I get to take pictures before the crowds arrive.

But 2 glasses of Uerige really isn’t enough, is it ?

*Guess them
It’s a toss up between Uerige and Füchschen when it comes to my favourite Alt, but that pub is easily my favourite in Düsseldorf. I always think there should be a plaque in that back room commemorating the scene in an episode of Auf Wiedersehen, Pet where Tim Healy and Michael Elphick drown their sorrows there before getting into a fight with the locals.
