JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT YOU’D DONE ALL THE PUBS IN HULL OLD TOWN…

February 2026. Hull.

Great excitement in the Pub Ticker community as I note a Draught Bass check-in on the way to Hull,

but sadly Nolan’s (next to Ye Olde White Hart) was experiencing a lack of the amber nectar. Has there ever been a cask beer so frequently out of stock as Bass ?

Never mind, Hull has beer,

notably in Scale Lane, one of the great pub strips.

And at the end we have Fretwells,

your GBG26 debutant, though I can’t help thinking I must have been in here.

At the bar, a stock exchange records the average price of a pint in York.

The landlord’s into coding” the barmaid’s perfectly reasonable explanation for the video screens showing share prices, train times and VAR decisions.

It’s a jolly place, perhaps too cluttered for some but it wowed me,

particularly the little Bass exhibit.

An Old Boy at the bar has a pint of White Rose pale. I follow his lead; it’s cool and chewy and bitter (NBSS 4).

Great soundtrack,

top toilets,

rubbish photos from yours truly. But like the artist I am, I will blame the camera.

      1. Coincidence -just been listening to when the levee breaks -on my random Spotify playlist along with loads of Rush & Tull -I’m sure Mudgie is somewhere out there controlling things

  1. Did you mean to write I blame the camra? Yesterday, the landlord at the Manifold Inn (a regular Bass pub), Upper Hulme was bemoaning the fact he can’t get any for a fortnight. It’s the fault of the people who started the Bass nonsense.

    1. Yes, those “people who started the Bass nonsense” have a lot to answer for. Luckily for them, no one really knows who they are.

    2. My first sighting and use of the new Bass glasses was in the Manifold Inn on 4th August last year.
That was after Ashbourne and Longnor pubs and on my way to being the only resident that night in the Sheen Bunkhouse.

  2. I took a couple of photos of Fretwells two years ago, then forgot all about it. I’ll have to consider this for a visit when the Leeds Rhinos visit Hull FC later this summer. Thanks for the reminder.
