December 2025. Leeds.

There’s no point running this blog as a diary if it’s not honest.
So, a week after boasting about my athleticism, brought on impatience, I need to confess to my clumsiness, as in my dash to edge past two folk walking side by side down the steps at Leeds Station I managed to fall down two flights of stairs.
This is me, collsapsed in a graceful heap at the bottom.

I guess it helps to be “big boned”, as that fall seemed only to increase my pace (without knocking anyt sense into me) for the next 50 minutes as I scooted round Leeds before my connection.

I popped in the main art gallery, pleasingly busy with children and students. You can’t go wrong with a random Gormley.

An excellent mix of classic and modern art includes this stretch of the M62;

The tiling in the cafe is a joy, though someone has clearly taken a dislike to Goethe,

possibly because of Victorian moral outrage at the “Swabian salute” in Götz von Berlichingen.

Talking of Victorians, I really wanted to see what Kirkstall Brewery had done with the newly re-opened Victoria Family & Commercial,

but the opening hours weren’t quite as generous as CAMRA reckoned.
Glad you didn’t break anything!

Luckily I’d left my Good Beer Guide at home, Dave.

Me too, because after reading the first paragraph, plus the single text lines above and below, I honestly thought the narrative was going to end in A&E (Emergency Room, for Dave’s benefit).
I nearly slipped A over T this morning, whilst de-icing the car. (Heavy rain on frozen surfaces, not a good idea).

Ooh nasty. Glad it was “nearly”.
I shall take a bit more care on station stairs in future 😉

Paul, but Martin’s much younger than us so avoided the eight visits I had to the local hospital after falling down just five steps last autumn.

Sometimes I feel I have to say something but on this occasion I’ll best keep quiet.

Sorry to hear about your fall Martin! I have the vision of Mr Bean trying to get down some steps behind two slow old ladies hogging all the space.

I lack Mr Bean’s elegance, Lana.

I remember the interior of the Victoria Hotel having been thoughtfully refurbished with fixtures closely resembling those of Victorian times. That was on 27th May 2018 with the late Richard Coldwell showing us round the city.
