THE RED SHED

December 2025. Wakefield.

I mean, who waits patiently at a station between connections ? 20 minutes, or 45 in Wakefield Kirgate on the way back from Todmorden, is the ideal time for stretching your legs to explore regal street art,

deciding which heritage acts to avoid next year,

and wondering how a fast growing cathedral city like Wakefield can be so unheralded.

Grief, I got my first COVID jab here in 2021, there ought to be a plaque.

A bit of a sprint to the Red Shed,

the old army hut with tricky opening hours.

Grief, a lot of pubs are shutting, not opening, at 7pm these days !

It’s 20 years since my visit, but the Labour Club is still the Wakefield GBG perennial, so is it any good ?

It’s magic. And not just because the beer is £3.20 a pint,

or because the house Tigertops Porter is a sensationally chewy NBSS 4+.

It’s a friendly, cosy, club alive with chat, mostly political (Dennis Skinner looms large), but with no-one dominating the conversation on the big table opposite.

A flying visit, but if I can persuade Mrs RM to do an overnighter I’ll go back,

if only to find out what this mysterious building on Lower Warrengate is.

  1. I wouldn’t avoid the double-bill of Bloc Party and Interpol, although 20-plus years on, I’d expect some of the lustre to have gone the way of some of their former bandmates.

    1. Interestingly, two bands with very similar histories and reputations, and just on the edge of “heritage” with 20th anniversary type tours. Not for me but I can see why folk my age want to see them.
