December 2025. Bexhill-on-Sea.

We’d entered the gates of Bexhill with such noble intentions. Culture at the De la Warr, a long bracing walk along the front, Eddie Izzard’s model railway…

But too much beer early on had scuppered plans, and I wasn’t even in the mood for some clothes shopping for me. Not today.
But a sobering coffee and salted caramel brownie in the Spoons on the way back to the station ?

A gorgeous cinema conversion, too, with real fire.

You’ll see I tipped the Picture Playhouse, along with Ruddy Duck, for future GBG glory back in 2023. Perhaps that’s what tipped them over the line.
More likely this Spoons is getting consistent top scores for cask, and an ill-advised Romney Marsh Plum Pudding was a second 4.5 in an hour.

I know nothing about beer, but you can tell by the head.
A year ago I was writing on the very same subject of Spoons.

Pub Curmudgeon wrote perceptively of “the long pull” in JDW pubs.
If, as it seems, they’ve finally cracked, there’s no stopping them.
That is an absolutely gorgeous building. The pub itself is a maze, and I can’t believe the OAPs reach the gents in time, as it’s located on a wing of the third floor or something. Cask in spoons can be a bit hit-and-miss, but so can it in other establishments.

I should have mentioned it’s a multi level maze, with the coffee machine placed in the least likely place !
