MRS RM SITS OUT SITTINGBOURNE IN SPOONS

December 2025. Whitstable.

Sittingbourne !!! Why on EARTH would I want to go there ?” said Mrs RM, crossing the road to Whitstable Spoons.

And so I left her to charge her phone in the Peter Cushing while I nipped to the Park Tavern on the train.

Whitstable is a gorgeous town, though of course I reserve the right to tell you that very similar weekend Londoner pashmina places like Southwold and Burnham are the evil of the world.

Ghost signs,

cute shops,

Proper Pubs,

famous quotes,

more inviting pubs,

and impossibly small museums (shut).

The Spoons is a former cinema,

so like Stafford it’s got more character than some,

and an 8.5/10 carpet.

It also had Otter’s Christmas beer at bargain prices, but Mrs RM seemed to show remarkable restraint during my 67 minute absence.

It wouldn’t last.

  1. “so like Stafford it’s got more character than some” – yes, and today I actually had a look what they’d got on, Woodfode’s Norfolk Nog not a bad beer I thought but I don’t really want to queue for half an hour in one of Tim’s venues. That was after the Sun and then in the Market Vaults I met Crewe Martin who was on his way to the Picture House getting round the town centre clockwise rather than my anticlockwise. He told me all about Stockport ten days ago.

  2. I can only commend the art deco faith shown in Tim’s resurrection in this instance.

It made a very welcome cool, coffee-supported hangover recovery, on a blazing June day too.

The Smack’s a Proper Many Things an’ all…

Ah. So it was a Spoons, and not the group Spoons.

“And so I left her to charge her phone in the Peter Cushing”

    I’m not sure if that’s:
    – the name of the pub
    – the name of a side room in the pub; or
    – a particular cushion in the pub

Hey, it’s your blog. You can say whatever takes your fancy.

    “famous quotes,”

Mudgie has a lot of ‘salient'” quotes on the left-hand side of his main page.

    “more inviting pubs,”

I can see it now. Wife tells the eldest to go fetch his Da. She says “go the Smack Inn, and smack ‘im!’

    “and impossibly small museums (shut).”

Hmmm. There’s a good chance they could turn that into a pub and get into the Guinness Book of Records.

“The Spoons is a former cinema,”

Ah. That (partly) explains the name.

“so like Stafford it’s got more character than some,”

    Yup.

    “and an 8.5/10 carpet.”

Did you clear that score with Si?

“It also had Otter’s Christmas beer at bargain prices,”

Sigh. My brother’s taunting me with similar noises about cheap Christmas beers from his part of France.

“but Mrs RM seemed to show remarkable restraint during my 67 minute absence.

    Oho!

    Cheers
