December 2025, Tankerton. Kent.
A short break from pubs as Mrs RM and I head to North Kent.

Don’t worry, it’s the posh bit, we’re not savages.
Six (6) posts coming up from Whitstable, with a night in Tankerton, where the MoHos were circling.

None of those is ours, which is a small, incognito (apart from the Bass insignia) campervan.
Most seaside town charge you £2.40 an hour to park; Tankerton wants £2.40 a day, and NOTHING during winter.
Tankerton is to Whitstable as Saundersfoot is to Tenby, or Walberswick is to Southwold, a virtually contiguous (love that word) village playing second fiddle to the famous tourist town but with real character of its own (Hey ! This is my pitch to Tankerville TIC !).

Some gorgeous cottages, a giant Sheps pub before the steep descent to the beach,

and then a vast row of neatly kept beach huts.

I was saying in that last post how fortunate I am to be able to afford a pie and a pint, to have sons who still phone me up each week, and now I get the best of the week’s weather on a glorious day at the coast.

A few hours later I’d overhear locals talk about £340k beach huts in Southwold; I sense these ones cost rather less,

but you’ll never see me staring out at sea, waiting to die.
It’s very peaceful, and those slopes house some of the UK’s rarest moths.

I’m more impressed with the housing on the approach to Whitstable and the oyster beds.

Some attractive hotels, too,

though at £180 tonight the Continental may be just outside our budget.
It’s not “waiting to die”, it’s “waiting for a pint of homebrew to clear”. I’ll leave it to you to clarify the difference.

“Don’t worry, it’s the posh bit, we’re not savages.”
Says the man with a camper van in Rye.
“where the MoHos were circling.”
Phew! Had to catch myself there for a minute. Over here we call those RVs (Recreational Vehicles). MoHos would be something entirely different!
“Tankerton wants £2.40 a day, and NOTHING during winter.”
It’s all about location, innit? The airport on Vancouver Island I fly out of is a maximum rate of $9 per day. At Vancouver airport, which we usually have to fly to first and change planes, is $190 per week ($34 per day).
“a virtually contiguous (love that word) village playing second fiddle to the famous tourist town”
Isn’t everything getting like that! Over here we have the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) which, besides Toronto, contains 4 regional municipalities plus 25 urban, suburban and rural municipalities. I’m sure you have similar (and bigger!) sprawls over there.
“a giant Sheps pub before the steep descent to the beach”
Sneaky that. Hopefully one doesn’t lose their footing going down to the beach, after a pint, or two.
“and now I get the best of the week’s weather on a glorious day at the coast.”
So much for grey Rye!
“A few hours later I’d overhear locals talk about £340k beach huts in Southwold; I sense these ones cost rather less,”
(location, location, location)
Plus, from the pic above from behind, I thought they were all changing huts!
“but you’ll never see me staring out at sea”
I do that, rarely. It’s mostly when we walk along the ocean, or stare at it from the safety of a waterfront bar/pub.
“I’m more impressed with the housing on the approach to Whitstable and the oyster beds.”
Bloody nice home in the pic below.
“though at £180 tonight the Continental may be just outside our budget.”
Agreed! Though, we may have to bite the bullet on something like that once in a while (sigh).
Cheers

Never heard of Tankerton yet a friend had a second property in Whitstable, a place always a joy to stay with her in (no oysters though – those will never appeal). Tankerton looks a beaut of a place even more so with special moths.

Yes Bill, without them Motherwell rather than a Lanarkshire town might just be the boundary between Manchester and Salford.

I realise now that I’ve been among those beach huts too, walking from Whitstable to Herne Bay. I didn’t know that the place had its own name though.
I wondered what, exactly, inspired the sometimes-grandiose imperial era hut names like “The Relief Of Mafeking”, but there’s a lot about which to wonder in England.

Etu, didn’t that give young Baden the idea of dressing boys up in uniform and taking them off to the woods ?

I think that he’d perhaps always had the idea, Paul, but maybe that gave him the excuse?

I suspect I’m only aware of Tankerton because it had an entry in the GBG, the same way I’d be aware of Canton or Roath or Pontcanna.
