September 2025. Bury St Edmunds.

It’s hard to tire of Bury St Edmunds warren of streets,

though the crowds tend to head to the string of cafes leading to the Abbey, leaving the timber for the toper to enjoy.

Some weird stuff here, even before you get to Spoons on a Saturday night.

I was considering options for a third and final pint in a well-pubbed town,

and to be perverse picked the one that had just dropped out of the Guide* after a long run.

The Oakes Barn has the feel of a theatre bar, and always seemed a bit marginal a GBG entry (to someone who wasn’t a regular so is ill-equipped to comment), though it bows out with the maximum 3 pints pots on the CAMRA website. Fair enough on the basis of this bellwether Woodfordes Wherry, an excellent 3.5.

It’s packed with Pravha mums and “sunglasses on the head” dads and ice cream kids in designer pushchairs,

but the main impression hear is canine, which I presume is the “C” that we’re all thinking of.

What else could it be ?
*They were playing Mumford & Sons which is likely to cause offence and distress and you know how seriously CAMRA take these things
Is it “Cambridge” Martin?

Maybe just a coincidence that that title comes just a day after a post about Old Growler ?

“HAVE YOU THOUGHT OF THE “C” WORD YET ?”
(Looks at the pic above)
Good lord. We still have to go through Canadian Thanksgiving* and Halloween first!
* — Canadian Thanksgiving is the 2nd Monday in October; for the Yanks it’s the 4th Thursday in November, probably because a lot of the US doesn’t get as cold as quickly as up here
“leaving the timber for the toper to enjoy.”
That just rolls off the tongue. 😊

(half a slow golf clap)
“and to be perverse picked the one that had just dropped out of the Guide* after a long run.”
You’re under the BRAPA influence!

When your local was the Sun, why venture anywhere else?
“and “sunglasses on the head” dads”
In the winter, do they change into “sweaters around their necks” dads?
“but the main impression hear is canine, which I presume is the “C” that we’re all thinking of.”
Not me! But I restrained myself and went with the hint from the photo.
“What else could it be ?”
That green/red thingy in the pic could mean it’s… crocodile?; Cthulhu?
Cheers
