My annual walk to one of the Kelham GBG perennials takes me past the old Stones brewery,
which sadly doesn’t look like it’s getting the makeover its Yorkshire neighbour Tetley is.
Across the road the Gardeners Rest continues as a fine example of a community pub,
largely unsung though with the best riverside garden in Sheffield.
You can still get good cask here for just over £4,
but I’m drawn here by the savage Untappd scores for Chin Chin’s Liquorice Stout,
and although the cask here is never the coolest,
it’s astonishingly tasty (3.5), down by the Don,
and if the Gardeners isn’t in the Top 5 pubs in Sheffield, it’d be Top 3 almost anywhere else.
